It was a long time coming but Keira Knightley and James McAvoy finally won something last night for their starring roles in the wartime epic Atonement. While it can hardly be put in the same class as the Oscars, Golden Globes and Baftas, collecting the best actor and best actress accolade in Empire magazine’s film awards at least breaks their duck.
Based on Ian McEwan’s novel, British director Joe Wright’s Atonement has been a huge hit.
But having been nominated for best actress at last month’s Baftas, Miss Knightley, 22, lost out to Marion Cotillard.
Co-star McAvoy was pipped to best actor by Daniel Day Lewis at the same event.
It had been a similar story weeks earlier at the Golden Globes when they lost out to Julie Christie and Day Lewis.
And despite Atonement being nominated for seven Oscars last month, McAvoy and Miss Knightley failed to land nominations for their roles.
Last night’s Empire awards - decided by the magazine’s readers - saw the film score a hat-trick with the addition of the best British film accolade.
The ceremony, at the Dorchester in London, also saw Sam Riley voted best newcomer for his role in Control, the film about the life of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. The film also triumphed in the best soundtrack category.
Other big winners included The Bourne Ultimatum, which was named best film, while American Gangster was voted best thriller.
